Help Afghan Evacuees in Wisconsin!

Pro Bono Attorneys are needed
Wisconsin is now home to over 800 men, women and children whom the United States government evacuated from Afghanistan. Many of these evacuees face the frightening and convoluted task of applying for asylum. These are people who are terrified to return to Afghanistan for fear of the Taliban government. Some are people who worked for the United States government, some are women who see no opportunities to choose their own futures, and others have been vocal opponents of the Taliban.
Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigration Services Milwaukee is asking attorneys with a Wisconsin law license to provide pro bono representation to help them obtain asylum so that they and their families can safely stay in the United States.

What will we provide?
Delving into a new area of law can be a little intimidating. However, we will provide you with everything needed. Our goal is not only that you provide great quality representation, but that you enjoy learning this new area of law!
Pro Bono Attorneys will receive:
- Extensive written CLE materials available on demand on a locked portion of our website and YouTube Channel.
- Series of videos to walk you through the asylum process, from crafting the perfect affidavit to assembling the asylum package, as well as some of the non-legal but very practical advice.
- A dedicated phone line for technical support.
- Sample briefs.
- Access to our online case management system for drafting the required forms, keeping case notes and creating reminders.
- Secondary Malpractice Insurance through the State Bar of Wisconsin.
- A first appointment zoom call with you and the client to help you issue spot.
What is the commitment?
Pro Bono Attorneys should commit to:
- Completing the asylum application. This should take about 20-25 hours.
- Writing the accompanying brief. (Don’t worry, we have samples!)
- Writing the client’s affidavits.
- Compiling supporting country condition reports. (Don’t worry, we already have them on a shared drive!)
- Accompanying the client to an interview at the Chicago asylum office. Right now, the asylum office is providing interpreters.
- We will have the materials available May 1, 2022. The claims MUST be filed before the Afghan evacuee has completed one year in the United States, which may be as early as August 2022. This would give you May, June, and July 2022 to complete the package.
What will clients commit to?
All clients must commit to:
- Bringing an interpreter for all meetings.
- Attending all meetings.
