Luis D. Gutierrez
Staff Attorney
Luis joined Catholic Charities of Milwaukee as a Staff Attorney in March of 2023. Before joining, he worked as a Public Defender in Waukesha County, advocating for clients in destitute financial circumstances facing criminal charges. There, he filed motions, cross-examined witnesses, and argued for clients in mental competency and extradition proceedings. In practice, he has found that developing a cohesive strategy and communicating often with clients is necessary to working with purpose and performance.
Luis is a 2020 graduate of Marquette University’s Law School. He was born in Miami, Florida to exiles who were paroled into the United States following the takeover of government in Cuba on January 1, 1959. Now, he aspires to help his clients forge new lives in new communities, transcending the grief of migration. Luis also enjoys cooking, reading, and watching highlights of baseball legends, like Martin Dihigo.
Luis is currently working on U Visa and VAWA petitions, asylum claims, and adjustments of status.

How to Shop for a Lawyer
Catholic Charities Has Limited Availability
Unfortunately, our case load is often at full capacity which prevents us from accepting new clients. We strongly urge you to take the time to shop for a good immigration attorney who can give you an honest assessment of your case. To help you get started, we have created a lawyer shopping guide and an immigration attorney referral list.
Additional Resources
When you have to depend on your lawyer to help you navigate and understand your options, it is especially important to find someone trustworthy and competent.
Refugees coming to the United States must make several adjustments, and often have questions about green cards, citizenship, and work permits.
These three immigration mistakes could seriously hurt your chances of getting a green card, or lawfully immigrating to the United States.
